September Board Meeting

October 8, 2009 - Wetzel County Chamber of Commerce

You do know that the Chamber board meetings are open to the public don't you?   It is usually just the board members that attend unless of course there is a complaint.  Same thing happens with the City Council meetings.   It seems as though most people must be very happy with the job both their Chamber and their City are doing.

Realistically, most of us lead very busy lives.  I can't make the Council meetings because of another obligation for Monday night (New Martinsville is on Monday night - check the paper for your city's meeting).   But I would encourage anyone who is able to please attend.  Same with the Chamber Board meetings.  They are held the last Wednesday of the month at 8AM in room 110 at WVNCC.  We thank the college for the use of their facility.   Go occasionally and see and hear first-hand what is happening in your county and your city.

The September Chamber of Commerce board meeting was held September 30.   And if you are not aware, we have a new tenant for the industrial park - Superior Oilfield Services.  We welcome them to our community.   The drilling that is on-going in Wetzel County should have a positive economic impact for years to come.    We were informed that there is another business interested in locating in Wetzel County but those talks are in the preliminary stages.  I will let you know as these talks progress.

Last year we received a Flex-E grant from the state and we have just re-applied for this year's grant.  This grant has allowed the college to present many free classes and training sessions and we would like to be able to continue that in the coming year.  The Chamber of Commerce provides 15% of the funds with the state providing the remainder.  What's in it for me?  Take advantage of the free classes offered at WVNCC.  I did.

The Chili-fest is coming up on October 31 and promises to be a delightful event.  If you have a special (or not so special) chili  that you would like to enter for judging, please contact the Chamber office at 304-455-3825 for details.  Or if you would like to set up a booth during the Chili-fest we can provide you with that information as well.

The Stern-wheeler Cruise was a rousing success.  Quinett's catered the meal and it is my understanding that this is the first time they have prepared chicken cordon bleu and it was spectacular!  I would love to see them add that as a regular menu item in the restaurant.  The DJ, Rob Campbell, was excellent and had the crowd either dancing or singing.   We had several couples attend from out of town.  One couple in particular was from the Columbus area and traveled to New Martinsville just for this cruise.  Sometimes we don't know how special our events really are!   I'd like to give a shout-out to Weldon Williams for a wonderful job chairing this event.

Plans are well under way for the Christmas Parade and Celebration Dinner.    This is the one time during the year when you get a two-fer with your sponsorship.  Not only do you get recognized and advertised during the parade, but you also receive the same during the Celebration Dinner.  The keynote speaker this year is Senator Jeff Kessler.   And of course, we will be celebrating the progress the Chamber of Commerce has made during the year.  I believe there is a video in the works so check the Chamber newsletter for more information.

The Chamber of Commerce membership drive is being held in October.   Join in October and receive 1/2 off your membership dues (if paid in October), and you'll be good until January 2011.  There are several other incentives for joining now so check with the Chamber office at 304-455-3825 for details.  You don't have to be a business to join.  We also welcome individuals and non-profit organizations.

As chair of the Community Involvement Committee, I was privileged to represent Wetzel County at the Governor's Conference on Tourism held Sept. 20 -22 at Snowshoe Resort.   It was my first visit to the resort and it is a lovely venue.  I have a new slogan for them - "The place where teens connect to their family, not their cell phones".  Very few people were able to access their cell phones and it was quite refreshing to see people interacting with one another without the constant interruption from cell phones.  There was a legislative panel, a luncheon address from Governor Manchin, and several break-out sessions for training and information.   It was very well staged by the West Virginia Association for Convention and Visitors Bureaus and the governor is one of the board members of WVACVB.  His speech reflected the positive impact that tourism has on the economy in WV and we also learned that the WV travel brochure was voted the best travel brochure in the country!  Very cool.  I presented a preliminary report to the board and will cover more specifics at the next meeting so stay tuned!

The Economic Growth Committee is working on several projects.  They are compiling a data base and need information on any business, commercial, or industrial facilities or land available in the county.    It is difficult to find this type of information unless the owners volunteer their support so if you have such property please contact the Chamber of Commerce with the specifics so you can be included in this database which is used not only to try to find the proper location for businesses seeking to locate in Wetzel County, but also to attract business here.  The committee is also working on a long range economic development plan for the county and I will update you as that is nearing completion.

You have a very busy and active Chamber of Commerce.  Please come join us.
