Chamber Board Meetings
June 3, 2009 - Wetzel County Chamber of Commerce
May 27, 2009
You have a very active Chamber of Commerce and several up and coming events. My goal through this post is to update you on those events as well as other items that may come up during the board meeting.
The Awards Dinner was very successful with well over 100 in attendance. Due to all the hullabaloo over the caterer, other Chambers were contacted as to how they handle having multiple caterers as members. Weirton Chamber of Commerce has a similar situation and when the bidding process wasn't working out they came up with a plan to rotate the events among the caterers who are members in good standing of the Chamber of Commerce. Your Chamber adopted a similar policy. We have three caterers who are members of the Wetzel County Chamber of Commerce and the next to cater was decided by a toss of a coin. If for any reason the caterer who is next in line is not able to cater a specific event, then we will go to the next one up in the rotation.
The next business after hours is on June 25, 6PM, and will be hosted by Radio Shack. I understand we might get to play some video games!!!
The stern wheeler is coming back to New Martinsville, and the Stern Wheeler Dinner Dance will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 6 to 9 pm. The cost will be $35.00 per individual and $60.00 per couple. We had a wonderful time last year and are really looking forward to this one.
The Chili-Fest is on Halloween this year and this will be the 10th anniversary. Plans are being made and if you wish to join the committee and help please visit the chamber office or the chamber website, www.wetzelcountychamber.com
The industrial site has been upgraded due to the leasing to ProCon who unfortunately was unable to make a go of it. ProCon was unable to fulfill their lease obligations and also left an outstanding utility bill with the City. The Chamber has moved to pay that obligation in good faith. We are currently working with RED and attempting to locate a tenant for the industrial site. With all the gas well activity going on, we are hopeful a new tenant will be found soon. I will keep you posted.
Watch for more local advertising on WTRF. And as a personal note, I want to thank them for becoming a more visible presence in New Martinsville. WTRF representative Jim Stein has come up with a wonderful advertising package exclusively for Chamber members. And I hope many of our members take advantage of the proposal.
And for all you local businesses out there who are struggling in this economic climate, the SBA, as part of the Economic Recovery Act, is offering loans up to $35,000 in working capital for viable businesses. The SBA is guaranteeing these loans and you won't have to start paying them back for 12 months. Payments will be made over a 5 year period. I believe you can start applying for these loans on June 15th.
