MHS Tennis Season In The Books

The Magnolia High School Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis season came to a close at regional tournament play held at the Parkersburg City Park on May 2. Regional teams, in addition to Magnolia, are Oak Glen, Weir, Weirton Madonna, Wheeling Central, St. Marys, Williamstown, Parkersburg Catholic, Ravenswood, Wahama (girls only), and Point Pleasant.

Junior Casey Nice, playing the girls’ number three position, was the only player to make it through the first round of singles by defeating Wheeling Central, but then losing to Williamstown.

The number one boys’ doubles team of juniors TJ Standiford and Devin Sizemore defeated Point Pleasant, but then lost a hard-fought 8-6 match against the number one-seeded team of Parkersburg Catholic. The number two doubles team of sophomores Kyle Morris and Alex Emch had a bye in the first round, but then lost to Wheeling Central.

Playing the last match of their high school tennis careers were the number one girls’ doubles team of seniors Anastasia Filatova and Rebecca Longwell.

They won the first round against Wahama, but lost to Parkersburg Catholic. Also winning in the first round was the number two doubles team of Nice and senior Cortney Throckmorton, defeating Wahama, but losing to Williamstown, ending Throckmorton’s high school tennis career.

The number three doubles team of juniors Heather Dills and Ashton McDougal finally took the courts at 5:30 p.m., the 111th match of the day. With a bye in the first round, they were defeated by Williamstown, thus ending a full day of continuous tennis play and a season plagued by inclement weather.
